Setting up FTP access

To connect to an FTP server, you need to know the FTP address and other values. When you enter the values, you can connect to the server immediately or save the values for reuse.

Either of the following procedures lets you set up a list of available servers (either FTP or WebDAV). Later in this chapter, you'll learn about using WebDAV. (See Managing a Web site with WebDAV.)

Important: Before you set up FTP access, make sure that you have TCP/IP networking set up properly on your computer. Consult your computer's Help for details.

To set up a connection to an FTP or WebDAV server:

  1. Choose Edit > Servers.
  2. Tip iconYou can also display the Available Servers dialog box by choosing Edit Server from the Server menu in the Site Settings, the FTP browser dialog box, or the WebDAV Browser dialog box. (See Connecting to an FTP server.)

  3. Click the New button New button in the Available Servers dialog box.
  4. Type a name in the Nickname text box. This prevents confusion if you add more servers to the available servers list.
  5. Do all of the following, using values provided by the FTP server administrator:
    • Type an address in the Server text box. The address must start with "ftp://" for FTP servers and "http://" for WebDAV servers.
    • Type a path name in the Directory text box. If your access privileges are limited to your personal folder, you may be able to leave the text box blank.
    • Type a user ID in the User Name text box.
    • Select the Save option and type a password in the Password text box.
  6. If necessary, click Advanced and do any of the following:
    • Select Use Passive Mode. You may need this option if the FTP server is protected by a firewall.
    • Select Keep Connections Alive to prevent timeouts due to inactivity.
    • (Mac OS only) Keep the Use ISO 8859-1 Translation option selected to use the Latin 1 character encoding set, which encompasses the majority of Western European languages.
    • Select Resolve Links to compare your local files with those on your FTP server.
  7. Click OK. This saves the values for reuse.

To set up a connection to an FTP or WebDAV server using the Site Settings dialog box:

  1. Open a site.
  2. Do one of the following:
    • Click the Site Settings button Site Settings button on the toolbar, and select FTP & WebDAV Server.
    • Choose Site > Settings, and select FTP & WebDAV Server.
  3. Choose a server from the appropriate Server menu.
  4. Click OK. The server you set up becomes the current server for the site--the server you connect to when you use the FTP browser or WebDAV browser.
  5. Note: If no server is available in the Server menu or you cannot find the desired one, choose Edit Server and follow the instructions in the preceding steps for setting up a connection to an FTP or a WebDAV server.
