Chem 406 Problem Set 8

Please be ready to share with class and hand in on Thursday, October 26 .

  1. Pick three Nobel prizes from Table 1.1 of Whitford, go to the Nobel Prize site, read the Nobel lectures, and write a brief summary describing the contributions that this prize made to our understanding of protein structure and function.

  2. Using Spartan Essential create pdb files for the first three amino acids that correspond to letters in your first and last name; for example, j-I-M z-o-o-K should do isoleucine(I), methionine (M) and lysine (K). Use the Organic Model Kit to create your models and show them in the crect ionized form for pH7. Export your models as a pdb files and use them to create a web site that displays your three amino acid structures using Jmol. Include two radio buttons that will allow the viewer to choose between a ball & stick and spacefill filling representations. Color your atoms according to element type. Place your site on your username_www share in a folder named PS8 and submit the URL for this site. Include in your site a short description of each amino acid, indicating the charactersitic contributions that each makes to the structure and function of a protein that contains them.
