Changing the way your desktop looks

To customize the way your desktop looks, use the Appearance control panel.

Open the Appearance control panel for me.

To display a new desktop picture or pattern:
1 Copy the picture onto your computer's startup disk.
2 Click the Desktop tab in the Appearance control panel and drag the picture onto the sample screen.
    3 Click Set Desktop.
If the picture is small (128 x 128 pixels or less), a new desktop pattern is added to the Patterns list. If the picture is larger than 128 x 128 pixels, a new desktop picture is displayed.

To display a different picture each time you start up your computer:
Click the Desktop tab and drag a folder containing several pictures onto the sample screen. Be sure the folder and its contents are on your computer's startup disk.

Tip: To get more help using the Appearance control panel, open the Help menu and choose Show Balloons. Then point to the feature or menu item you're interested in.

If your desktop picture redraws slowly
Your computer might be running low on memory. Set the Appearance control panel to display a pattern, instead of a picture, or add more memory to your computer.

If you notice visual anomalies in some applications
Make sure "Smooth all fonts on screen" is not selected in the Appearance control panel, or contact the application vendor for updates to address this problem. You can reduce anomalies in highlighting by choosing a light highlight color.

Saving a group of appearance settings

To save a group of appearance settings and add it to the list of available themes:
1 Click the Themes tab and select an existing theme.
2 Modify the settings in the other sections of the Appearance control panel.
3 Click the Themes tab and click Save Theme.
