Using a microphone with your computer

Your computer may come equipped with a built-in microphone. If it does not, attach a USB microphone to the USB port, or an analog microphone to the sound input port.

Before you can record sound from the microphone, you need to select it as your sound input source.

To select the microphone as your sound input device:
1 Open the Sound control panel.
Open the Sound control panel for me.
    2 Click the Input tab.
3 For a built-in microphone, choose Built-in Mic. For an external microphone, select the recording device from the list of devices.

If you can't change the sound source:
Deselect the "Check signal level" option in the Input section of the Sound control panel. Try quitting all open applications, and turn off any control panel that is using sound, such as the Speech control panel.

    If the microphone doesn't work:
Make sure you're using a USB microphone, PlainTalk microphone, or a PlainTalk microphone adapter. Standard microphones will not work with your computer.
