Doing other work while you're printing

With a feature called "background printing," you can use your computer to do other work while documents are printing.

It takes longer and requires more disk space to print a document with background printing turned on. If you have a complex document that you want to print quickly, especially one that uses color, turn off background printing.

You turn background printing on and off either in the Background Printing section of the Print dialog box or in the Chooser, depending on your printer software.

Turning on background printing in the Print dialog box

To set background printing in the Print dialog box:
Select the document you want to print, open the File menu and choose Print, then select Background Printing in the pop-up menu that shows the word "General."

Tip: To use background printing each time you print on this printer, click Save Settings at the bottom of the Print dialog box.

Turning on background printing in the Chooser

If you don't see a background printing option in either the Print dialog box or the Chooser

You may not be able to use background printing with the printer you've selected. Check the documentation that came with the printer software.
