Saving computer images on videotape

To record computer images on videotape, your computer must have a graphics card that has video output ports. See the documentation that came with your computer or graphics card for more information.

If you're recording using a VCR, you should connect a television to the VCR so you can preview the results before you record. If you're recording using a video camcorder, use the camcorder's viewing screen to preview output.

To record computer images on videotape:
1 With the computer shut down and turned off, connect the VCR or video camcorder to the FireWire or video output port on your computer or graphics card.
2 Turn on the VCR or camcorder.
You may need to change the settings on the VCR or camcorder so it displays video from the port the computer is connected to. See the the instructions that came with the device for details.
    3 Turn on the computer.
4 Adjust the resolution and video settings in the Monitors control panel.
Open the Monitors control panel for me.
Tip: If you are using a PowerBook with video output capability and you want to see the image on your screen on a video monitor, click the Video mirroring portion of the Control Strip and turn on Video mirroring.
5 When you're ready to begin, press Record on the VCR or camcorder.

    If the monitor is black:
Your computer may not have enough video memory to display an image through the video output ports and on the computer monitor at the same time. If your computer supports it, try installing more video memory.

If the video screen is black:
Make sure the computer and VCR or camcorder are properly connected, and that the VCR or camcorder is set to display video from the port the computer is connected to. If this doesn't help, use the Monitors control panel to select a lower monitor resolution.

    If the image flickers:
Some combinations of colors or patterns cause flicker. If you have a Reduce Flicker option in the Monitors control panel, turn it on.

If the colors don't look right:
Try adjusting the television's color settings. Televisions can't display some monitor colors.

If you can't change the resolution:
You can't change the television to a higher resolution. Set your monitor to the lowest possible resolution so that the monitor and video device can both display the same image.
