Throwing away files
To throw away a file you no longer need:

Drag the icon of the file onto the Trash icon. |
If you can't drag a file to the Trash:

If the file is on a floppy disk, the disk may be locked. |
|
To unlock a floppy disk, slide the tab on the back of the disk so that it covers the hole in the corner of the disk. |
|
The file may be in a shared folder. To turn off file sharing, use the File Sharing control panel. |
Emptying the Trash
Files that you place in the Trash remain on your computer's hard disk until you empty the Trash.
To empty the Trash:

Switch to the Finder, then open the Special menu and choose Empty Trash. |
If you can't delete a file from the Trash:

The file may be locked. To unlock a file, click the file's icon, then open the File menu and choose Get Info. |

Tip: To delete locked files that are in the Trash, hold down the Option key when you choose Empty Trash from the Special menu. |
|
An application program may be using the file. Close the file or quit the program. |
Turning off the Empty Trash warning
When you empty the Trash, a dialog box appears asking if you are sure you want to empty it.
To turn off this warning:

Select the Trash icon, then open the File menu and choose Get Info. Click the "Warn before emptying" checkbox to deselect it. |
