Assigning labels and colors to files You can assign text labels and colors to files. For example, you might make all the files you're working on red so that you can easily distinguish them from other files. You can also sort files or search for files based on their labels. To assign a label and color to a file: Customizing your labels To change the names and colors of the labels you can assign to files, switch to the Finder, then open the Edit menu and choose Preferences. Changing the icon of a file You can change the icons of most folders, applications, documents, and unlocked disks. To change the icon of a file, copy the picture you want to use as the icon and paste it into that file's Info window. Related topic
