About icons and the desktop

When you turn on your computer, you see the desktop. The desktop is where you do your work. On the desktop you see small pictures, or icons, which represent the items you work with or create on your computer.

There's a different icon for each kind of item on the desktop. For example, a program icon is an item you can open and use to create documents; you can create folders to hold those documents.

    Program               Folder

    To open an icon:
Double-click it. (Click the icon twice quickly, being careful not to move the mouse between clicks.)
When you open an icon, its contents appear in a window.

Tip: To learn more about an icon, open the Help menu and choose Show Balloons, then point to the item you want to learn about.
