Recording scripts

Some applications, such as the Finder, let you record actions using the Script Editor. You may be able to record actions such as opening windows, typing in text fields, clicking controls, and making menu choices. Recording is an easy way to create a simple script or part of a more complex script.

To record actions, the application must support recording. To determine if an application is recordable, try recording an action.

To record a script using the Script Editor:
Click Record, perform the actions you want to record, then click Stop.

The Script Editor only records actions that change a document, setting, or other aspect of the application. It does not record actions such as clicking in a window or moving the mouse.

After you finish recording actions, the Script Editor creates a script that matches the actions. You can then edit the script to do exactly what you want it to do.

If you cannot record actions in an application:
The application may not be recordable. You can only record actions in a recordable application.
