Affects of Kornberg's Work

Understanding the regulation of transcription will help in further understanding of function of different organs, and therefore a better understanding in stem cell production. As noted by information found on the nobelprize.org website, "This knowledge is important since disturbances in transcriptional regulation contribute directly to cancer, inflammation, heart disease and metabolic diseases."

For example, a study involving locating breast cancer genes recognizes the necessity of understanding the transcription process. This study intended to locate tumor suppressing genes by using "gemomic and transcriptional information to identiy and prioritize candidate caner genes in regions of increased and decreased chromosomal copy number in a cohort of primary breast cancers." Basically, by having the knowledge of the origination of gene expression, genes can be identified and linked to various diseases and illnesses, and a cure can hopefully be found. [1]
