Stem cell research is not the only area of biology that will be affected by Kornberg’s work in transcription.  Another area that will be greatly affected is research on tumors and possible how they are formed.  One study aimed to identify genes that were expressed and that could be used as a marker (3).  This is along the same lines as stem cell research in that by knowing how transcription works and having a detailed view of this maybe we can determine what goes wrong.  If it can be determined what genes are causing the tumor growth maybe it can then be determined how to control the transcription process so that these genes are no longer turned on.  Although this maybe not be a way to prevent tumor growth it could be used to produce a treatment that will cause the tumor to stop growing one it has been identified.
