Comprehensive Major: Biochemistry/Molecular Biology

The major is designed to lead to entry-level employment opportunities in research and development in industrial and government laboratories as well as to entry-level positions in the biotechnology industry. Students will also be well prepared to enter graduate studies in molecular biology, genetics, and related fields, as well as for admission to professional schools in medicine, osteopathy, and dentistry. For those entering in 1998 and beyond a total G.P.A. of at least 2.70 in the following courses will be required for admission to this degree program: Chem 213, 321, 323 and Biol 201 and 300

______

Total Chemistry Credits Required 32 credits

*Chem 101, 104 may be substituted for Chem 115, but credit for 101 does not count toward the major.

Important Suggestions:

**Chem 431 (432 optional) may be substituted for Chem 406 (Math 215, 16 and Physics 231, 232 required if Chem 431 (432) is taken). This substitution is strongly recommended for students considering graduate study in Biophysics/ Biochemistry as compared to Genetics, Medicine,Cell, Developmental or Molecular Biology. For those who are uncertain of their future path, the calculus-based physics (231,232) and math (215) alone will increase your options. Students are also be advised to consider Biology or Chem 399 and 499, Independent Study (1-3 credits) as additional electives to provide research experience.

III. Other Course Requirements

Biology/Chemistry 412 -Biochemistry/Molecular Biology Seminar
Physics 211, 212 -General Physics (or 231,232)
Math 114 Calculus and Analytical Geometry I
General Education* Category IA Language Skills
Category III Social Sciences
Category IV Humanities
English 110 English Composition
Wellness/Physical Activity

*The General Education credits required for Categories IB and II are met with courses required for the major.
