In 1997 alone it was estimated that Americans spent over $27.0 billion on alternative therapies including herbal supplements. The recent craze for St. John's Wort to treat depression is just one example. There is a general impression among consumers that these natural remedies are completely safe and at least as effective as "Western medicine". Is this true? In this presentation I will discuss some common misconceptions about natural product drugs and herbs and introduce the science of Pharmacognosy. At its best, this discipline combines historic and current knowledge of folk medical practices and treatments with the analytical tools of chemistry and the discerning edge of the scientific method.
